JPG is accepted everywhere. WebP looks better at the same size but some forms don’t accept it.

How to compress an image to 500KB

    1. The size is already set to 500KB; change it any time.
    2. Drop your photo onto the box, or click to choose it from your phone or computer. HEIC photos from iPhones work too.
    3. If the form asks for exact pixels (such as 200 × 230 px), open More options and enter them.
    4. Press Download. Several photos? Use Download all to get a ZIP.

What is a 500KB image used for?

    • High-quality photos for upload forms with a 500KB limit
    • Portfolio and product photos
    • Sharing photos by email without huge attachments
    • Printing small photos

Best dimensions for a 500KB photo

For a sharp result at 500KB, aim for about 2500 px on the longest side. At 500KB most photos keep almost all their detail. If your original is a big phone photo (3–8 MB), this usually needs only a small drop in quality and no resizing.

    How the compression works

The tool first tries the highest JPG quality. If the file is too big, it finds the highest quality that fits in 500KB; only if that isn’t enough does it reduce the width and height, a little at a time. You get the largest, sharpest image that is still under the limit, never a file that a form would reject for being one byte too big.

    Tips for application forms

    • Read the form’s rules: most give a range such as 20–50 KB and sometimes exact pixel dimensions.
    • Choose a size a little under the maximum, for example 45 KB for a 50 KB limit.
    • Use a plain, light background and good light: plain backgrounds compress far better than busy ones.
    • Crop signatures closely and scan them on white paper so they stay crisp at 10–20 KB.
    • Save as JPG unless the form says otherwise; it is accepted everywhere.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image to 500KB?

Drop your photo onto the box above (or click to choose it). The size is already set to 500KB, so it is compressed straight away; press Download to save the JPG. To fit an exact shape, enter the width and height in pixels under the settings.

How can I reduce a photo to 500KB without losing quality?

The tool keeps the highest JPG quality that fits in 500KB and only reduces the dimensions when it has to. For the sharpest result, crop away anything you don’t need first and use a plain background: less detail means more quality left for what matters. Recommended size at 500KB: about 2500 px on the longest side.

How do I reduce a photo from 5MB to 500KB?

Drop it here with the size set to 500KB. Phone photos are saved at very high quality, so the tool can usually reach 500KB by lowering the JPG quality slightly, keeping the full resolution or close to it.

Why is my image a little smaller than 500KB?

The tool picks the highest quality that stays at or below 500KB, because forms reject files that are even one byte over. Here 1KB = 1,024 bytes (500KB = 512,000 bytes), as most upload forms count it. If a site counts 1KB as 1,000 bytes, choose a size about 3% smaller to be safe.

Can I compress PNG, HEIC or WebP images too?

Yes. You can drop JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and iPhone HEIC photos. They are saved as JPG, which every form accepts, or as WebP if you choose it. Transparent areas in PNGs are filled with white.

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device, so photos of your face, ID or documents are never sent to a server. It even works offline once the page has loaded.
