Editing tools

  • Edit text: click any line of the original PDF to rewrite it in place. Fix a typo, update a date or price, or delete a sentence; the old words are removed when you save.
  • Add text: type anywhere, with a choice of font, size, color and bold. Great for filling in forms.
  • Sign: draw or type a signature and place it on any page.
  • Highlight: mark important passages in yellow, like a highlighter pen.
  • Draw: freehand pen for notes, ticks, arrows and underlines.
  • Rectangle: box in a section or point out an area.
  • Whiteout: cover text, numbers or images with white, then type over it to correct a document.
  • Image: add a logo, stamp, photo or scanned signature (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC).

Good to know about editing text

A PDF stores text as positioned words, not paragraphs, so editing works one line at a time and longer text doesn’t flow onto the next line. Changed lines use the closest standard font (Helvetica, Times or Courier) in the original size and color. Scanned documents are images, so use Whiteout and Add text on them instead.

Keyboard shortcuts

V select · E edit text · T add text · D draw · H highlight · R rectangle · W whiteout · S sign · I image · Delete removes the selection · arrow keys nudge it (Shift for bigger steps) · Ctrl/⌘+Z undo · Ctrl/⌘+Shift+Z redo · Esc deselect.

Private by design

Most online PDF editors upload your document to their servers. This editor runs entirely in your browser using Mozilla’s PDF.js and pdf-lib, so your file and your signature never leave your device. It’s free, with no account, no watermark and no limits.

Frequently asked questions

How do I edit a PDF for free?

Drop your PDF onto the box above. To change the words already in the PDF, choose Edit text and click a line. To add things, choose a tool from the toolbar (Add text, Draw, Highlight, Rectangle, Whiteout, Image or Sign) and click or drag on the page, then press Save & download PDF. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit.

How do I add text to a PDF?

Choose Add text, click where you want to type and start typing. Use the toolbar to change the font, size, color and bold. Select a text box to move it, drag its corner to make it bigger, or double-click it to change the words.

Can I change the existing text in a PDF?

Yes. Choose Edit text and click any line: it opens for editing right where it is, so you can add words, delete words or retype the whole sentence. When you save, the original words are removed from the page and your new text is written in their place, on the same line, in the same size and color.

Will the edited text match the original font?

It uses the closest standard font: Helvetica for sans-serif text (Arial, Calibri and similar), Times for serif text and Courier for typewriter text, with the original size, color and bold. Short edits usually blend in; if the document uses a distinctive font, the changed line may look slightly different from the rest.

Why does some text get covered instead of replaced?

Scanned pages are pictures, so there is no text to edit there: use Whiteout and Add text instead. A few PDFs keep text inside embedded objects; in that case the editor places your new text over a cover in the background color, and the old words remain in the file underneath. The message after saving tells you when this happened.

How do I fill in a PDF form that isn’t fillable?

Use the Add text tool to click on each blank line and type your answer, Draw or a ✓ typed as text for tick boxes, and Sign to add your signature. It works on scanned forms too.

Can I sign a PDF here?

Yes. Choose Sign to draw your signature with a mouse or finger, or type your name in a handwriting style. Place it on the page, drag the corner to resize it, then save.

Is the text I add searchable?

Yes, for Latin-script languages such as English, Spanish, French and German: text is added with standard PDF fonts and can be selected and searched. Text in other scripts (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi and others) is added as a sharp image so it always displays correctly.

Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

No. Your PDF is opened and edited inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, so contracts, tax forms and medical records stay private.
