How to generate UUIDs
Pick v4 for fully random IDs or v7 for IDs that sort by creation time, choose how many you need and a format, then copy them all at once. IDs are generated with your browser’s cryptographic random generator and are never sent anywhere.
Paste any UUID into the inspector to check it is valid, see its version, and read the creation time hidden in v1 and v7 UUIDs.
Frequently asked questions
v4 or v7: which should I use?
v4 is fully random and the most widely supported. v7 starts with a timestamp, so new IDs sort in creation order, which keeps database indexes fast. For new database keys, v7 is usually the better choice.
Can two UUIDs ever be the same?
In practice, no. A v4 UUID has 122 random bits; you would need to generate billions per second for decades before a collision becomes likely.
Is a GUID the same as a UUID?
Yes. GUID is Microsoft’s name for the same 128-bit format. Some tools show GUIDs in uppercase or wrapped in braces; use the format options to match.
