How to check a file checksum

Switch to File, choose the downloaded file, and paste the checksum published by the download site into Verify a checksum. A match means the file arrived complete and unchanged. Large files are hashed on your device, so nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hash?

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of data. The same input always gives the same hash, and changing even one character changes it completely, which makes hashes ideal for checking that a file hasn’t been altered.

Which algorithm should I use?

Use SHA-256 for checksums and general use. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes and are only here for compatibility with older systems.

Can I hash passwords with this?

Don’t store passwords as plain SHA or MD5 hashes. Use a slow password hash such as Argon2 or bcrypt on your server.
