Length and randomness. A random 16-character password with letters, numbers and symbols has over 100 bits of entropy, far beyond what any attacker can guess. Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a password be?
Use at least 16 characters for important accounts. Each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords, so length matters more than adding odd symbols.
How is the strength measured?
Strength is shown in bits of entropy: the length times the log₂ of the number of possible characters. The crack time assumes an attacker testing 10 billion guesses per second against a fast hash.
Are these passwords really random?
Yes. They come from crypto.getRandomValues, the same cryptographic source browsers use for secure connections, with no bias toward any character.
