How to convert a Unix timestamp
Paste a timestamp to see it as a date in your time zone, in UTC and in ISO 8601 format. To go the other way, pick a date and time and copy the timestamp in seconds or milliseconds. The live counter at the top shows the current Unix time.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
It is the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00 UTC, ignoring leap seconds. Because it doesn’t depend on time zones, it is how most systems store moments in time.
Seconds or milliseconds?
Unix tools and most APIs use seconds (10 digits today). JavaScript and Java use milliseconds (13 digits). The converter detects the unit from the number’s size.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store timestamps as signed 32-bit numbers overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64-bit values and aren’t affected.
